BOSTON—
For the fourth straight year, the William Smith rowing team's varsity eight finished in the top 10 of the women's collegiate eights division at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. The Herons' top crew finished eighth out of 31 entries in the world's largest regatta.

On Sunday, the varsity eight negotiated the 5,000-meter Charles River course in 17 minutes, 21.351 seconds.  William Smith bested local rivals from Hamilton (20th), Rochester (23rd), and RIT (24th), and finished just 3.257 seconds behind seventh place St. Lawrence. Defending national champion Williams won in 16:24.219.

The Heron varsity eight was powered by Christine Babcock, Crary Chandler, Alaria Pizzo, Kara Ruskin, Jess Steketee, Alayna Beebe, Sarah Gordon, Liz Hafer, and Libby Hughes.

On Saturday, William Smith's varsity four—#Kim Goral, Tallarie Thurgood, Laura Cappio, Christina Dagle, and Rebecca Charlton—finished 16th out of 30 crews in the women's collegiate fours race. The Herons logged a time of 22:00.973 against a strong head wind. Emory posted a winning time of 20:34.555.

"Kim steered a strong course, especially through Weeks Bridge," Head Coach Sandra Chu said. "Just after they turned, there was a three-boat collision behind her. And, on the turn entering Eliot Bridge, she skillfully avoided a two-boat clash and entanglement, zipping to the inside lane to avoid the chaos.

"The boat rowed well above the conditions, handling white capping at the start as well as unpredictable gusting with strong composure. This boat put out its best performance to date and I am pleased with how they have improved through the season."

William Smith will conclude its fall season on Saturday, Oct. 30, when the Herons compete in the Head of the Fish Regatta.
