3 Statesmen tennis players garner team awards at Block H

Three Hobart College tennis players were honored at the annual Block H Awards Dinner sponsored by the Statesmen Athletic Association and the Hobart Athletics Department. Senior Kevin Bates earned the Myron V. Jacobs '37 Award for excellence as a tennis player and as a citizen of the College community.

Senior Walter Green received the William A. Walley '61 Tennis award for sportsmanship, team work, individual play and leadership. First-year Michael Fields was honored with the Rookie Award for Tennis.

Bates was third on the team with 12 doubles wins this season. He posted a 12-6 overall doubles mark.  Bates logged a 5-2 record with junior Sam DeLuccia, and went 6-3 with Green. He also posted a 4-4 singles record, including a 2-1 mark at No. 5. In his four years on the tennis team, Bates recorded 25 singles victories and 35 doubles wins. He also earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic team for three straight years.

Green was second on the team with a 14-2 overall singles record. He was a perfect 5-0 at No. 6 and went 3-0 at No. 5. Green notched a 5-2 mark at No. 4 and added one victory at the No. 2 spot. He also posted a 7-3 doubles record this season. The three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree paired with Bates for a 6-3 mark, and earned one doubles victory with senior Matt Hursh at the No. 3 spot. In his four-year Statesmen tennis career, Green notched 33 singles wins and 11 doubles victories.

Fields led Hobart with a 17-3 singles record in his rookie season. He teamed up with junior Bruce Grant to also lead Hobart in doubles, posting a 10-6 record. Fields notched a 10-2 mark at No. 5 singles. He was a perfect 4-0 at No. 4, went 2-0 at No. 6 and earned one win at No. 3. Fields finished his first collegiate season going 8-2 in his last 10 singles matches. Fields registered a 10-5 record at No. 1 doubles with Grant. Fields earned the Liberty League Rookie of the Week award three times.

The Statesmen posted a 17-5 overall mark this season. Hobart finished the year ranked No. 14 in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. This year's Statesmen tied the program record for wins in a season.
