Litt topples record on Day 3 of UNYSCSA Championships

William Smith College first-year Sarah Litt broke a 24-year-old school record on Day 3 of the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships hosted by Ithaca College. She lowered the 200-yard butterfly record by 0.89 seconds.
 
In the morning prelims, Litt qualified for the consolation final with a time of 2:16.04, more than 1.7 seconds behind Heron Hall of Honor inductee Kate Hendrickson's 1989 record of 2:14.35. In the evening finals, Litt put together an exceptional swim. Her first 50 split was 30.15 and she reached halfway in 1:03.9. Litt swam the final 50 in a slightly faster time (34.75) than her third 50 (34.81) to finish second (10th overall) in a time of 2:13.46.
 
Classmate Brooke Adams swam in the third level finals of the 200 fly. After posting a qualifying time of 2:27.4, she lowered her time 2:21.43 in the evening, winning the heat and finishing 19th overall.
 
In the 100 backstroke, senior Casey Sherwin placed sixth in the consolation final (14th overall). She logged an evening time of 1:01.48, 0.51 seconds faster than her prelim time.
 
A pair of Herons also swam in the 100 breaststroke. Seniors Heidi Gordon and Katie Stebbins reached the third level final. Gordon was second (18th overall) in the evening session, hitting the wall in 1:10.12, with Stebbins placing fifth (21st) in 1:11.73. Gordon's finals time was nearly a one-second improvement over her morning prelim time (0.97).
 
William Smith is in 12th place with 249 points with one day remaining. The Herons trail 11th place RIT by 74 points.
 
Tomorrow's prelims begin at 10 a.m. with the finals starting at 6 p.m.
