3 Statesmen earn awards at Block H

Three members of the Hobart tennis team were honored by the Statesmen Athletic Association and the Hobart Athletics Department at the annual Block H Dinner on April 22. Senior Sam DeLuccia earned the Myron V. Jacobs '37 Award for excellence as a tennis player and as a citizen in the College community.

Sophomore Michael Fields was presented with the William A. Walley '61 Tennis award for sportsmanship, team work, individual play and leadership. Sophomore Henry Smith received the Rookie Award for Tennis.

A co-captain, DeLuccia ranked second on the team with 10 singles wins in his senior season. He added six doubles victories. DeLuccia played 12 matches at No. 1 singles spot, and went 6-2 at No. 2. He earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic team in 2012 and was tabbed an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2011. After transferring to Hobart as a sophomore, DeLuccia earned the Rookie Award for Tennis in 2011. In his three years on the team he posted 34 career singles victories and 34 career doubles wins.

Fields led the Statesmen with an 11-8 overall singles record and a 12-11 mark in doubles play. He went 3-4 at No. 3 singles and registered a 3-2 mark at No. 4. Fields notched a 5-1 record at the No. 5 spot. He paired with senior Bruce Grant for a 9-9 overall doubles record, including six victories at the No. 1 spot. Fields has produced 28 singles wins and 25 doubles wins so far in his Hobart tennis career. He earned the Rookie Award for Tennis last year.

Smith, who is also a member of the Hobart cross country team, played in five singles matches for the Statesmen tennis team this year. He worked hard to improve his game and proved his commitment to the Hobart tennis program over the course of his rookie season. Smith earned his first collegiate victory at Union 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 6 singles spot.
