Statesmen head in different directions in latest polls

The Hobart College football team capped its third consecutive undefeated regular season on Saturday with a 28-23 win over the University of Rochester. The victory was good enough for the American Football Coaches Association voters to move the Statesmen up one spot to No. 7 in their latest ranking, while the D3football.com voters were unimpressed, moving Hobart down one spot for the second week in a row, landing at No. 9.

The Statesmen had two players earn a spot on the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll this week, junior running back Conner Hartigan and sophomore linebacker Michael Harper.

For the second game in a row and third time this season, Hartigan ran for 100 yards. His first touchdown run of the day was a 21-yarder that put the Statesmen up 21-0. Hartigan appeared stopped after a short gain on the play, but spun off the pile and broke free. He closed out the Hobart scoring with a 55-yard TD run out of the wildcat, giving the Statesmen a 28-16 lead early in the fourth quarter. Hartigan averaged an impressive 8.8 yards per carry against the Yellowjackets, finishing the day with a game-high 114 yards rushing.

A starter in all 10 games this season, Hartigan has produced 751 yards on 117 carries (6.4 yds/rush) and has nine rushing touchdowns. In 27 career games, he has 211 carries for 1,300 yards (6.2 yds/rush) and 14 touchdowns.

Making his first start at linebacker, Harper recorded a team and career-high 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and an interception on Saturday. The Statesmen led 21-0 at halftime thanks in large part to Harper's efforts. The Yellowjackets' most promising drive of the first half moved into the red zone, but Harper came up with his first collegiate interception at the Hobart 14 to quell the threat. Rochester made just one other venture into Hobart territory in the first half, but was pushed back across midfield by Harper's sack that resulted in an 11-yard loss.

Harper has appeared in all 10 games this year, recording 33 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, 1.0 sack, one forced fumble, and one interception. In 19 career games, he has 48 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.

Hobart (10-0) will host Ithaca (7-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Boswell Field. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. Tickets are $8 for general admission, $4 for students with valid ID.
