3 Herons honored with lacrosse team awards

The William Smith Athletics Department honored three Heron lacrosse players at the annual William Smith Athletics banquet on April 21. Junior Geneva Calder and senior Hayley Braun shared the Patricia Price Genovese Lacrosse Award as the team's MVPs and junior Allie O'Hara earned the Shirley Zornow '48 Lacrosse Coach's Award.
 
An All-Liberty League second team selection, Calder shared the team lead with 20 caused turnovers this year. She ranked third with 28 points on 20 goals and eight assists. Calder ranked second on the team with 36 ground balls and she added 19 draws. Calder scooped up a season-high five ground balls and added four goals against Brockport. She produced four or more points in four games this year. Calder tallied a season-high five points on three goals and two assists in a 17-15 win over RIT.
 
Calder also shared the Evaleen C. Harrison '19 Award. She has played in 49 career games, posting 52 goals and 17 assists for 69 career points. Calder has also logged 93 ground balls, 52 draws and 52 caused turnovers in her Heron career. She is a two-time member of the Liberty League All-Academic team.
 
An All-Liberty League first team honoree, Braun also shared a team-high with 20 caused turnovers this year. In addition, she led William Smith with 37 ground balls, ranking eighth in the conference in ground balls per game (2.31). Braun tallied a career-high seven points on two goals and five assists this season. In her final collegiate game, a 15-8 win over RPI, she led the Herons with a career-high five points on a goal and four assists.
 
In four years on the team, Braun played in 42 career games. She notched 16 points on nine goals and seven assists. Braun added 64 ground balls, 17 draws and 30 caused turnovers. Braun also was named to the Liberty League All-Academic team three years in a row.
 
A goalie, O'Hara played in four games this year, starting two. She posted a 9.49 goals against average and a .333 save percentage. O'Hara has matured a great deal over the past year and her skills have greatly improved. Her spirit, each and every day, has driven the team to another level. O'Hara is there for every one of her teammates both on the and off the field. Everyone can feel her energy during games and every day she challenges not only her teammates and coaches but also herself to be better.
 
O'Hara has played in 13 career games. She has posted 32 career saves. O'Hara has earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic team for the last two years in a row.
 
William Smith finished the year with a 7-9 overall record and a 5-4 mark in Liberty League play. The Herons were tied for fourth in the conference standings, but lost the head-to-head tiebreaker with Rochester due to the Yellowjackets' win over William Smith during the regular season.
