ITHACA, N.Y.—Senior quarterback
Shane Sweeney broke the Hobart College career passing yards and career passing touchdowns records today, but Ithaca College scored a late touchdown to eke out a 24-21 Liberty League win at Butterfield Stadium this afternoon.
Sweeney was 19-of-35 passing for 242 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver
Brandon Shed that gave Hobart a 21-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The go-ahead score was Sweeney's 62nd career TD pass, breaking a tie with Shawn Mirzo '07 for the Hobart career record. Sweeney also raised his career passing total to 6,207 yards, eclipsing Mizro's standard of 6,097 yards.
Shed was Hobart's top receiver with four catches for 80 yards. He extended his games with a reception streak to 26, tied with Nico Karagosian '97 for the third longest in school history.
After combining for 17 points in the first three quarter, the Statesmen (3-2, 0-1) and Bombers (2-2, 2-0) put up 28 points in a back-and-forth fourth quarter.
First-year running back
Dakota Harvey scored on a 3-yard run four seconds into the final frame, capping off a 12-play, 91-yard Hobart drive that put the visitors in front 14-10. Harvey also scored the game's opening touchdown on a 3-yard run, giving him a league-leading seven rushing touchdowns on the year.
Ithaca answered with a 6-play, 62-yard march that senior running back Tristan Brown finished off with a 5-yard run into the end zone with 12:27 remaining.
Hobart struck right back as Sweeney was 5-of-6 passing for 71 yards on a nine-play, 84-yard drive that ended with Shed's 30th career TD. First-year
Kyle Hackett's extra point gave the Statesmen a 21-17 lead with 8:24 to go.
The scoring frenzy looked like it would continue as Ithaca promptly worked its way into the red zone, but the Hobart defense stiffened and the Bombers failed to gain another yard after getting a first-and-goal from the Hobart 9. Quarterback Wahid Nabi's fourth down pass fell incomplete.
It was the third time in the game that the Statesmen defense shut out Ithaca in the red zone. Nabi threw incomplete on fourth-and-goal from the Hobart 4 on its first possession of the day and saw a 37-yard field goal attempt blocked by
Tom D'Antonio early in the second quarter.
Ithaca used all three of its timeouts as its defense forced the Statesmen to punt with 1:46 remaining. Nabi used the time to direct a six-play, 46-yard scoring drive that Brown finished off with a 2-yard dive into the end zone. The extra point made it a 24-21 lead with just 42 seconds left.
Brown rushed for a game-high 120 yards and two TDs. Nabi was 29-of-45 passing for 343 yards and a TD.
Hobart was able to work the ball to the Ithaca 34 with little more than a second remaining on the clock. Sweeney heaved his final pass into the end zone in the direction of junior tight end Matt Woods, but senior Jordan Schemm broke up the pass to end the game.
Hobart led 7-3 at halftime. Junior David Prudhomme kicked a 39-yard field for the Bombers' first score. In the third quarter, Will Gladney pulled in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Nabi, stake Ithaca to a 10-7 lead. Gladney had 12 catches for 183 yards.

Jedh Downey added 10 stops.
Linebacker Pat Minogue had a team-high eight tackles for Ithaca.
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when the Statesmen host Rensselaer (3-1, 0-0) in a Liberty League game scheduled to kickoff at noon.
