Five members of the Hobart College cross country team were honored at the Block H Awards Dinner by the Statesmen Athletic Association on April 23. First-year
Max Tulchinsky was presented with the team's top honor, the Charles P. McCoy '68 Award, as the team's most outstanding runner.
Sophomore
William Fletcher was given the John L. Brown '32 Award as the most improved, while senior
Josh Owens was presented with the Dr. August H. "Gus" Hillman '25 Memorial Award for outstanding sportsmanship, leadership and determination. Senior
Jeremiah Piersante received the
Ron Fleury Award for his outstanding dedication to his academic work, his teammates and to the HWS community, while first-year
Zachary von Reitzenstein earned the Rookie Award for Cross Country.
Tulchinsky led Hobart in all eight races he competed in this season. He logged his season and team-best 8-kilometer time 26:45.0 at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships. Tulchinsky finished fifth out of 105 runners at the Cross Country Only Conference Championships in Geneva, N.Y., crossing the line with a time of 28:00.1. He was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week and earned All-ECAC honors after finishing fifth at the ECAC Championships. In his collegiate debut, Tulchinsky finished 55th out of 170 runners at the Hamilton Invitational.
Last year's Rookie Award for Cross Country winner, Fletcher ran in all 11 races this fall. He logged his season best 8k time of 27:14.1 at the Geneseo Invitational, crossing the line 94th out of 238 runners. Fletcher earned Liberty League Performer of the Week honors following the Hamilton Invitational on Sept. 9. He traversed the 5k course in 17:09.7. At the CCOC Championships, Fletcher finished ninth with a time of 28:49.0. He was named to the Liberty League All-Academic team.
A team captain, Owens ran in nine races for the Statesmen this fall. A Liberty League All-Academic selection, he recorded a season-best 8k time of 28:46.3 at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships. Owens finished 26th out of 59 runners at the Hamilton Invitational. He finished the 5k course in 18:14.9.
A Liberty League All-Academic selection, Piersante was also a team captain. Despite being sidelined by an injury, he was presented with the award for his leadership and dedication to the team. Piersante ran in 13 meets in his Hobart career, posting his best 8K time at the 2016 CCOC Championships, crossing the line with a time of 29:15.0.
In his rookie season, Von Reitzenstein competed in eight of Hobart's meets. He turned in his best 8k performance at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, crossing the line with a time of 28:26.1. Von Reitzenstein placed 23rd at the CCOC Championships, stopping the clock at 30:05.9. He also earned a 28th place finish at the ECAC Championships. Von Reitzenstein made his collegiate debut at the Wildcat Invitational, finishing 59th with a time of 22:02.9.
Hobart posted a pair of second place finishes during the 2016 season. The Statesmen were second out of 12 teams in the Cross Country Only Conference Championship on the Seneca Lake State Park Course in Geneva. Hobart also finished second at the ECAC Championships in Milton, N.Y. The Statesmen finished in seventh place at the Liberty League Championships.
