Team of Distinction: 1960 Hobart Soccer

Schedule

On October 23, 2010, the Statesmen Athletic Association (SAA) bestowed the title of Hobart Team of Distinction on the 1960 soccer team. They were recognized before the kickoff of the Hobart-St. Lawrence soccer game. The 1960 team showed a way to play together and succeed on the soccer field that only great teams possess. They boasted a winning percentage of .812 that stood as the highest in Hobart soccer history for 32 years.

The 1960 team opened its season on a six-match unbeaten streak including five wins and one tie. These six games saw the Statesmen outscore their opponents by a margin of 30-6, including a 9-0 win over Le Moyne to start the season and a 7-1 victory over Clarkson. In their final two games of the season they faced a tough Cortland squad that defeated them by a score of 3-1. The Statesmen were quick to bounce back though, and four days later they defeated Hamilton 4-2, to finish their season at six wins, one loss, and one tie.

This 1960 team boasts three members of the Hobart Athletics Hall of Fame, John Adams Jr. ’62 (HOF Class of 1988), Thomas Poole ’61 (2002) and Dr. Arno Wittig ’61 (2006). Wittig and Adams became Hobart’s first soccer All-Americans when they were selected to the 1960 team.
