Donald R. Harter '39 was a three-sport athlete at Hobart. He was a four-year letterwinner in both football and lacrosse and a three-year letterwinner in basketball. His senior year he was the captain of the football and lacrosse teams. He was named the outstanding defenseman of the 1938 undefeated lacrosse team. Harter was president of Phi Delta Fraternity and was a member of all four honor societies, including the Orange Key, Chimera, Druid, and Phi Beta Kappa as a junior. He was a Rhodes Scholar finalist and graduated magna cum laude and first in his class. Harter was a charter member of the Statesmen Athletic Association and received the SAA Annual Award for outstanding contribution to Hobart Athletics in 1975. He was a member of the Hobart Alumni Council from 1953-80 and served as vice president of the Alumni Association in 1961 and 1962 and as president in 1963 and 1964.
