After beginning his Hobart career in football, basketball, and lacrosse, F. Ross Zornow ’45 had his athletic career temporarily sidetracked by World War II, serving in the Air Corps in the Pacific. At the conclusion of the war, he returned to Hobart and made his mark in football and lacrosse. An active member of the Hobart Student Government, Zornow was his junior class vice president, as well as the student government vice president.

A Hobart and William Smith Trustee between 1975 and 1988, he’s now a Trustee Emeritus of the Colleges. Zornow was an active member of the Hobart Club of Rochester for many years.

He is one of the founders of the Statesmen Athletic Association, a life member of the SAA, and a former SAA president and director. Zornow and his late wife, Shirley A. (Piper) Zornow WS ’47, played key roles in the re-location of Boswell Field to its current location and funding the existing press box. The Shirley A. Zornow Memorial Award is presented annually to a member of the Hobart football team and has been endowed through Ross’s generous loyalty. Both of their sons are Hobart graduates – Jeffrey ’78 and Allen ’84.
