As a senior, he was named a Little All-American in both sports, becoming the first basketball player in Hobart history to earn such a distinction. He combined with fellow Hobart Hall of Famer Arthur W. Lambert '58, to lead the football team to a 6-0 record in 1957, the most recent undefeated team in Hobart football history. Mendez was the team's leading rusher that season with 377 yards, and led the team in scoring, with eight touchdowns in six games. During his three varsity football seasons, the Hobart Statesmen posted an overall record of 19-2-1. As a senior, he became the first Hobart basketball player to earn All-America honors, as he averaged 17.3 points per game to help the team to an 11-6 record. Also a leading player as a junior, he helped the team to an overall record of 33-20 in his three seasons.
