Jackson W. Bowling '38 was an all-around athletic standout. He starred in football, basketball, and lacrosse at Hobart, while also showing his skills in many other sports. He won nine letters as an undergraduate, and was a leading player as a quarterback on the football team, center midfielder on the lacrosse team, and guard and floor general for the basketball team. He also won campus championships in tennis and bowling, and downed the Eastern Intercollegiate Boxing Champion at 158 pounds as a senior. Captain of the basketball team as a senior, he was class vice-president as a sophomore and junior and was a member of the Orange Key, Chimera, and Druid honor societies. His athletic career extended well beyond his days on campus. Later in life, he went on to win Western New York badminton titles in both singles and doubles, and the U.S. Squash racquets title in doubles play.
