An All-American swimmer, Van Fossan Kenny came to William Smith from Warren, Ohio.
As a sophomore, she captured the 1995 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) championship in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 free and earned the championship meet MVP award. Van Fossan Kenny defended her crown in the 50 and 100 free at the UCAA Championships in each of the next two seasons. During her junior year, she swam on the 200 medley relay team that set a then school record at the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Championship and then produced an individual school record in the 100 free at the NCAA Championship meet. Van Fossan Kenny capped her career with a record-setting swim in the 50 free at the UCAA Championships and another relay record at the NYSWCAA meet, this time in the 400 medley. A three-time NCAA Championship qualifier, she earned All-America honors in the 50 and 100 free and was a three-time College Swimming Coaches Association of America All-Academic honoree. She garnered the Most Valuable Swimmer Award four times.
As a student-athlete at William Smith, Van Fossan Kenny felt that each team had its own voice and that the Heron athletic department had top rate coaches and support staff that offered Heron athletes the tools needed to be successful. “I improved throughout my years at William Smith as a swimmer, but most importantly I grew as a person,” said Van Fossan Kenny.
Van Fossan Kenny earned William Smith’s 1995 Stephanie Christie Award and 1997 Hazel Nettleship Hardy Award. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in physical chemistry and earned an optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry in 2002. Van Fossan Kenny is an optometrist at Eye Appeal Masters In Vision. She also works part-time at Empire Vision and is a member of the New York State Optometric Society, Rochester Optometric Society and the American Optometric Society.
