John N. Marchitell '66 excelled in both football and lacrosse while at Hobart College. He was a four-year letterwinner in both sports and served as co-captain of the football team in 1965. During his senior year he established several school records that have since been broken. Marchitell became the first player to gain over 1,000 yards in a season when he rushed for 1,112 yards. With that accomplishment he broke fellow Hobart Hall of Famer Merle Gullick's 36-year-old record. He also established the single-game rushing record when he gained 272 yards in Hobart's upset win over Union in 1965. He received several individual awards for his exceptional athletic ability. Marchitell accepted the Vincent Welch Memorial Trophy as the Most Valuable Player on offense for football in 1964, and, in 1965, he won the Lt. John Vandeverg Trophy for the most improved player in lacrosse, the Most Valuable Player Award in football, and the Babe Kraus award as the Hobart College Athlete of the Year.
