Martin was a skilled athlete who worked very hard to become a complete player. Every day she gave her best and motivated her teammates.
A three-sport athlete, Martin excelled in basketball, field hockey, and lacrosse. She earned William Smith’s Stephanie Christie ’82 Award as the rookie of the year, the Hazel Nettleship Hardy ’65 Award, and the Marion Harrison Greene ’20 Award.
A two-time team MVP, Martin led the William Smith basketball team in scoring and rebounding as a senior, earning honorable mention All-Star status from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. During her junior season, she averaged 16.1 points and 6.8 rebounds and earned a spot on the Fredonia All-Tournament Team. As a sophomore, Martin was second on the team in scoring (13.1) and rebounding (6.7) and served as a team co-captain. In a late season game at Oswego, she accounted for nearly half of the Herons’ scoring (34 pts) in a 69-59 win over the Lakers.
In field hockey, Martin led the team in scoring twice, producing 12 career goals and 10 career assists. As a junior, she recorded a career-high five goals in 12 games.
On the lacrosse field, Martin recorded a career-high 20 goals during her senior season, earning a spot on the All-State first team and team MVP honors. Head Coach Pat Genovese (Hall of Honor Class of 1999) told the Finger Lakes Times that year that Martin was, “probably the strongest midfield player we’ve ever had at William Smith.” Genovese also nominated her to try out for the U.S. National Team.
Originally from Cortland, N.Y., Martin was a member of Hai Timiai and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. In 1993, she earned a master’s degree in education from the University of New Hampshire. She has taught math and economics at Worcester Academy, taught English to professors at Tsinghua University in China, and taught preschool. Martin currently teaches second grade and the master’s level language arts course at Berwick Academy.
