Cornwell was a fierce competitor, striving to win every battle on the pitch and the hardwood. She was an All-American in both soccer and basketball and is the only Heron to be named the national player of the year in soccer.

A four-year starter at goalie, Cornwell was a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first team All-American. She compiled a 0.53 goals against average (GAA), an .849 save percentage, and a 61-15-5 record with 26 career shutouts. The three-time all-conference selection started 81 of the 83 matches she played in, logging 7,344 minutes, 17 seconds. Only 11 players in Division III history have played more minutes. She helped the Herons to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of conference championships (1999, 2001).

Cornwell opened her sophomore season with a career-high 14 saves against the College of New Jersey and finished the campaign with a career-high 116 saves and an .892 save percentage. The following year, she posted a career-low 0.55 GAA and a 17-2-1 record, the Heron standard for wins in a season.

As a senior, Cornwell orchestrated a career-high nine shutouts and guided William Smith to the NCAA semifinal round. She was named the 2002 NSCAA Division III Player of the Year, the first and to date, only Heron to earn that honor.

A three-year starter at forward in basketball, Cornwell scored 1,192 points (11.5/g) and grabbed 704 rebounds (6.8). She graduated ninth on the career scoring list (currently 11th) and fifth on the career rebounding list (currently 6th).

As a first-year, Cornwell was a key contributor to a squad that went 23-4, won a conference championship, and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Over the next three seasons, she averaged no less than 10.4 ppg and 7.2 rpg, making another NCAA appearance in 2000 and ECAC Upstate Tournament showing in 2002.

As a senior, Cornwell produced career-highs of 15.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.1 blocked shots, earning Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America honorable mention.

Additionally, Cornwell earned William Smith’s Hazel Nettleship Hardy ’65 Award (outstanding student-athlete in her middle years) and the Marion Harrison Greene ’20 Award (outstanding senior athlete).

Originally from Scottsville, N.Y., Cornwell earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Florida. In 2008, she graduated from Florida State Fire College with certifications in Firefighter I and Firefighter II and is a certified emergency medical technician. Cornwell is currently a firefighter for the City of Gainesville.
