An offensive lineman, Thomas stood 6-foot-4, weighed 220 pounds, and was one of the fiercest blockers in Hobart football history. He was the linchpin for the line during his career, starting all 36 games and helping the Statesmen to a 27-8-1 record during his career. Thomas cleared the way for Hall of Fame tailbacks
Don Aleksiewicz ’73 (Class of 1986) and
Rich Kowalski ’76 (Class of 1987). Hobart led the nation in rushing in 1972 and finished second in 1971. Thomas was a four-time All-ICAC pick, a two-time All-ECAC selection, and was an honorable mention All-American as a senior.
Thomas was also a member of the track and field team, throwing the shot and discus. He set the school record in the shot put, earning All-ECAC honors in 1974.
Thomas graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and earned a master’s degree from Oneonta State.
