An English major, Robert D. Wynne earned eight varsity letters during his four years at Hobart. Excelling on both the gridiron and lacrosse field, the two-sport athlete collected many individual awards for his play.
On the football field, Wynne earned the Mike Roberti ’90 Memorial Award for his love of the game and the Welch Memorial Award for his scholarship, sportsmanship, and perseverance during his senior season. Chosen as the 1993 Most Valuable Player, he captained the Statesmen football team his junior and senior years.
On the lacrosse field, Wynne was an outstanding faceoff man, winning an astounding 62.3 percent of the restarts he took, including 209 during Hobart’s championship run in 1994. He also finished his career with 300 ground balls. A member of two national championship teams, the midfielder collected many individual honors as well. A two-time first-team USILA All-American (1993-94), he earned the USILA Division III Midfielder of the Year Award in 1994. Wynne received the Kraus Memorial Award, as the College’s top senior athlete and the Crook Family Award as the lacrosse MVP in 1994. Wynne also participated in the North/South All-Star game his senior season.
After earning his degree from Hobart, Wynne remained active in lacrosse as an assistant coach at Hampden-Sydney College and Hobart. Wynne earned his first head coaching job, guiding Virginia Wesleyan College to its highest national ranking, 15th.
After a one-year stint with the Marlins, the Little Silver, N.J. native accepted an assistant coaching position at Cornell University, where he was the defensive coordinator. Wynne left the Big Red after the 2002 season to join the Salisbury School where he dons many hats as an English teacher, college adviser, assistant coach for the varsity football team, and head coach of the varsity lacrosse program.
