4/16/2024 11:12:00 AM

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Tewaaraton Foundation announced today that former Hobart Lacrosse All-American Bill Miller '91 will receive the Tewaaraton Legend Award at the annual Tewaaraton Awards Ceremony May 30, in Washington, D.C. The Tewaaraton Legend Award annually honors recipients who played college lacrosse prior to 2001, the first year in which the Tewaaraton Award was presented.

A four-time All-American, Miller was one of the most productive attackmen in the storied history of Hobart lacrosse. He holds the Statesmen career record for goals, scoring 173 times in 67 games. Equally adept as a playmaker, Miller ranks second on Hobart's career assists list with 145. He's also second in career points (318).

"I feel so lucky to have been Bill Miller's coach," said B.J. O'Hara '75, Hobart head coach from 1990-2001. "An individual and talented player like Billy doesn't come along very often in a coach's career. He was so highly skilled and athletic, but more importantly, he was a wonderful teammate and an outstanding leader. I congratulate him for this outstanding and well-deserved award."

While helping Hobart win the NCAA Division III National Championship in each of his four years, Miller paced the Statesmen in assists each season, led the team in points three straight times, and was the top goal scorer during his sophomore and senior years. During the 1988 NCAA Championship run, Miller broke the NCAA tournament game record for assists with seven in a 19-6 rout of Roanoke in the semifinals. He finished the 1988 NCAA tournament with a record 17 assists in three games. Miller also tied the NCAA tournament record for most points with 23.

In addition to his All-America credentials, Miller was a two-time winner of the USILA's National Division III Player of the Year award (1990, 1991) and National Attackman of the Year award (1989, 1991). In 2013, he was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Miller is also a member of the Hobart Hall of Fame (1997) and US Lacrosse Philadelphia/Eastern Pennsylvania Hall of Fame (2002).

Miller's excellence was rewarded with a lengthy list of awards at Hobart's annual Block H Dinner. He earned the Lacrosse Rookie Award in 1988. In each of the next two seasons, Miller took home the William H. Dobbin '40 Memorial Award as the team's offensive MVP. As a senior, he was presented with the Judge Kane Memorial Award as the team's MVP and the Francis L. "Babe" Kraus '24 Memorial Award as Hobart's most outstanding senior athlete.

Miller played professionally in the indoor NLL for the Philadelphia Wings from 1991-1998, and was MVP of the NLL's championship game in 1998. He was also a two-time member of the U.S. Men's National Team, helping Team USA to world championships in 1994 and 1998.

The Tewaaraton Awards Ceremony will be held at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. It is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. May 30, 2024. CLICK HERE to purchase tickets.
