Wherry was the seven seat in the Hobart varsity eight that won its first gold medal at the New York State Championships since 1996. In Saturday's heats, Wherry and his crew won their opening race in a time of 6:23.1, more than 12 seconds faster than runner-up Army. Local rival Ithaca gave the Statesmen more of a challenge in Sunday's grand final, but the result was still the same. Wherry and Hobart crossed the finish line first in 5:59.9, 1.5seconds ahead of the Bombers.
