Moulthrop won the Laser North No. 1 at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in the sailing team's opening weekend. He posted a regatta-low score of 56, finishing in the top four in 14 of 18 races, including seven victories. The triumph qualified him for the Carl Van Duyne Trophy, the MAISA Singlehanded Championship, Oct. 10-11.
