A liberal arts major and New Hyde Park, N.Y., native, Dr. Robert J. Demuth was a three-year letterwinner in lacrosse and basketball. Known for his toughness and leadership, Demuth was a prolific goal scoring attackman on the lacrosse field, graduating as Hobart’s all-time leader in career goals with 83. He currently ranks 22nd. The two-time All-American served as the team captain in 1951, when the Statesmen posted a 9-2 record, a record for wins in a season at that time. Demuth’s collegiate career culminated with a starting nod in the 1951 North-South All-Star Game. During his three seasons, the Statesmen lacrosse team posted a sterling 23-9 record.
As a cager, Demuth scored a career-high 14 points against Buffalo in his final Hobart game, lifting the Statesmen to a 7-6 record, the program’s first winning season since the end of World War II.
A respected leader of the campus community, Demuth was selected to Chimera and as a member of the prestigious Druid Society during his tenure as a student.
Following graduation, Demuth served four years in the U.S. Navy as a chief engineer aboard the USS Blue before earning his medical degree from the University of Rochester. He worked at several distinguished medical centers as a plastic surgeon, including the Oregon Health Science Center, ran a private practice, and served as the President of American Association of Hand Surgery before closing out his medical career as a volunteer international plastic surgeon.
Demuth has served as a member of the Statesmen Athletic Association and been an alumni class representative of the class of 1951.
