Flannery Rosenthal, a Greene, N.Y., native, arrived on campus before Title IX became law, nevertheless, she was a champion archer and a member of the inaugural basketball team and the swimming and diving team.

Flannery Rosenthal won a number of state and national championships as an archer, including the 1970 New York State Archery Association Indoor Women’s Championship. “Although there was no archery program at William Smith and no New York State intercollegiate archery, the William Smith athletic department was very supportive and encouraging, providing a practice area for me and even allowing me to teach archery classes,” Flannery Rosenthal says.

Flannery Rosenthal was a diver for William Smith as a first-year. In her sophomore and junior year, she competed on the basketball team until she broke her foot which forced the end of her career on the court.

As a scholastic athlete, Flannery Rosenthal competed in field hockey, softball, and volleyball in addition to archery and basketball. After earning a bachelor’s degree in history from William Smith, she took up golf and skiing. Flannery Rosenthal continued to excel in archery after her time at William Smith. She placed second in Class A Women in the New York State Archery Association in 1975.

Flannery Rosenthal spent a decade on the staff at the World Archery Center. She is currently self-employed as an American Contract Bridge League certified Duplicate Bridge Director. She has pursued her passion for bridge, earning the honor of being an American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) Silver Life Master. She has also served as the ACBL Unit 120 president and board member and was appointed a lifetime member of the Good Will & Charity Committees of District 4.

For her outstanding efforts to serve her community, she was awarded the World Archery Center Weston Trophy for Meritorious Service and the American Contract Bridge League Unit 120 Meritorious Service Award.
