Hobart Ice Hockey

A four-year starting defenseman, Greg Gallagher was just the second Hobart hockey player to be named to the American Hockey Coaches Association East All-America team. A two-time All-ECAC West selection and ECAC West All-Academic pick, he solidified the blue line with his versatile play. The Framingham, Mass., native recorded 64 points, including 50 assists, in 102 career games.

Greg GallagherAt the time of their graduation, Gallagher and his classmates were the most successful graduating class in terms of wins (63) and winning percentage (.646, 63-32-11) in the history of the Statesmen hockey program. In the 24 seasons prior to their arrival on campus, Hobart had just four winning seasons, but Gallagher and Co. produced four consecutive winning slates.

In 2004, Gallagher and the Statesmen captured the hearts and minds of Hobart fans everywhere by winning both the ECAC West regular season and tournament championships. The sophomore was second on the team with 15 assists, including a helper in the program’s first ever NCAA tournament appearance, and tied for fourth with 17 points.

Gallagher finished his senior season with 23 points on five goals and 18 assists. The captain tied for the ECAC West lead in points by a defenseman and was 15th in the nation. Gallagher was Hobart’s lone first-team All-ECAC West selection that year. Defensively, he was a key component in the stingiest Statesmen team in Hobart history at the time, allowing a then season record 2.53 goals per game.

Gallagher led Hobart to a 20-8-0 record in 2005-06, at the time a program record for wins in a season. In the NCAA quarterfinals, he assisted on what proved to be the game-winning goal as the Statesmen upset perennial powerhouse Norwich University 3-1, Hobart’s first NCAA tournament victory and first trip to the national semifinals where St. Norbert needed overtime to sneak past Hobart 5-4.

At the Block H Awards Dinner, Gallagher was named the Francis L. “Babe” Kraus ’24 Memorial Award winner as Hobart’s most outstanding senior athlete. For the second straight season, he also earned a share of The Boswell Award as team MVP.

Gallagher played professional hockey for the Cincinnati Cyclones, Johnstown Chiefs, and the Allen Americans between 2007 and 2011.
