John S. Adams Jr. '62 was one of Hobart's most versatile athletes, earning 11 varsity letters: four each in soccer and basketball, and three in baseball. He served as captain of all three teams and received the Babe Kraus Award as senior Athlete of the Year. Adams was most recognized in the sport of soccer and was a major factor on the 1960 team which went 6-1-1 and narrowly missed a bid to the NCAA Championships. Among the team's leading scorers all four years as a midfielder, Adams was a four-time All-State selection and earned All-American laurels in 1960. Adams also excelled in basketball and was a starting guard for most of his career. He also enjoyed a successful baseball career. A member of the Orange Key honor society as a sophomore, Adams was a member of the Arnold Air Society, the Air Force ROTC honor society, for four years. At graduation he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Air Force where he served a distinguished term of duty. He received the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service as an orbital analyst. He later served on the support staff for Apollo 7 as a member of the North American Air Defense Command which followed the precise orbital flight of the space craft.
