Madi Rose sails during the 2005 team race national championship regatta.

Mandi RoseOne of the very best sailors in William Smith history, Mandi Rose ’07 (née Markee) was a two-time Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association All-American crew. She and her teammates won two ICSA National Championships and helped HWS capture four Middle  Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Championships.

During her collegiate sailing career, Rose represented HWS in six ICSA National Championship events, helping the team to a podium finish four times. Rose was a key member of the HWS team that earned the program’s first two national championships, the 2005 team race championship and the 2005 coed dinghy championship.

As a first-year, Rose helped the Herons qualify for the women’s dinghy national championship with a fourth-place finish in the MAISA Women’s Championship. She received the Sailing Coach’s Award as the Herons’ most improved sailor that year.

During the 2004-05 racing season, Rose helped HWS capture MAISA Championships at the America Trophy and the Prosser Trophy and competed at a national championship event for the first time, racing in Austin, Texas. She and her teammates made history, winning the program’s first national championship when they captured the team race title with a 13-4 record. Three days later, Rose placed fifth in A division, helping HWS secure the coed dinghy championship. With a pair of national championships on her resume, Rose was named an All-American crew.

In addition to the success on the water, Rose’s scholarship helped the sailing team win the 2005 William Smith Dean’s Award, presented to the Heron team with the highest GPA in the fall semester. During her junior year, Rose and HWS defended their titles in the Prosser Trophy and the America Trophy. Rose and her teammates went on to finish third at team race nationals and 10th at coed dinghy nationals.

As a senior, Rose served as a team captain and sailed to a third-place finish at team race nationals and 11th place at coed dinghy nationals. Rose crewed with skipper Trevor Moore ’07 in the coed dinghy championship, placing second in A division. They were in the top half of the field in 13 of the 18-race series, finishing in the top three six times. Following the season, Rose was again named an All-American crew.

At the Heron Awards Banquet in 2007, Rose earned the Evaleen C. Harrison ’19 Award for excellence in academics and athletics as well as the Ady Symonds ’96 Award as team MVP.

In 2008, Rose was a part of Team Silver Panda from the New York Yacht Club that won the 2008 British Open Team Racing Championship. Two years later, she was crew for the winning team at the Etchells World Championship.

Rose graduated in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in physics and environmental studies. In 2009, she earned a master’s degree in geophysics. Rose later earned a master’s and a doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese medicine from Pacific College of Health and Science.
