Induction Class of 1997
William Smith Administrator

Mary HoskingMary Hosking retired in May 1987 after serving the William Smith athletics department for 23 years as a coach, teacher, and administrator.

Hosking oversaw the William Smith athletics program develop from a three person physical education department to a department of physical education, intercollegiate athletics, and dance that at the time had a staff of 14 and had become prominent in women’s intercollegiate competition on the state and national levels. At the time of her retirement, all six Heron teams were ranked among the best in the state in their sports and two were represented in NCAA post-season action. During Professor Hosking's tenure at William Smith College, athletic programs and opportunities for women athletes underwent dramatic changes and were presented with many new opportunities. Hosking sought to bring William Smith's program in line with the best colleges in the nation. She persevered for equitable facilities, staff, scheduling, program, and financial support.

From 1963 through 1987, Hosking had served as coach of every sport the school had offered. She made perhaps her greatest contribution to the tennis team, serving as head coach of that squad until assuming the title of Tennis Program Coordinator in 1986, in order to devote more time to administrative duties. She surpassed the prestigious 100 win mark with the tennis team in 1982.

Active in many state, regional, and national organizations, Hosking was president of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) and has served as chair of the groups ethics and eligibility committee, as well as its tennis committee. She is a member of the Cortland State Hall of Fame and is a member of their Hall of Fame Committee. In 1987, the Independent College Athletic Association recognized her commitment and service to intercollegiate athletics and in 1991, the NYSWCAA presented her a service award for contributions to women in athletics.

She was also a founding member of the Heron Society. She worked hand in hand with President Brewster and treasurer Van Arsdale to lay the foundation which established the Heron Society.
