Red Dragons top Herons, 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y. -- The Cortland State University women's field hockey team, ranked fourth in the nation, came into this afternoon's game with William Smith averaging nearly three goals per game. The Red Dragons managed only one against the stingy Heron defense. It proved to be enough.

For the first time this season, William Smith, ranked 13th, was held without a goal, suffering a 1-0 defeat. The Red Dragons improve to 11-2 on the year, while the Herons fall to 10-4. Kate Barvanis scored the game-winner with 17:53 remaining in the second half, assisted by Layla Ali.

In the cage, sophomore Marjorie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) made eight saves for the Herons, while Becky Gillette made 10 stops for the Red Dragons.
