GENEVA, N.Y. -- Senior Laura DeSario (Ward Melville/East Setauket, N.Y.) scored off a penalty corner just 2:09 into overtime to give visiting Gettysburg a 2-1 win over the William Smith field hockey team. Senior Steph Fisher (Lewisburg/Lewisburg, Pa.) provided the game-winning assist as the Bullets, ranked No. 4 in Division III, remained undefeated at 10-0. The Herons suffered their third, one-goal defeat this season and fell to 7-3.
Sophomore Nicole Livingston (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) gave William Smith a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on an assist from Sage Lansing (Lake Forest/Lake Forest, Ill.). Livingston now has eight goals on the season, including five in the last three contests. First-year Carrie Reeve (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) answered for Gettysburg, converting on a penalty stroke with just over nine minutes remaining in the opening half.
Sophomore Marjorie MacVean (Johnstown High/Johnstown, N.Y.) made 10 saves for the Herons, including six in the final 37 minutes. Junior Maureen Giese (Oak Knoll School/Maplewood, N.J.) recorded 11 saves for the Bullets, who outshot the Herons 15-12.
William Smith, ranked No. 13 in the nation coming into today, travels to Ithaca College on Wed., Oct. 6 for a 3:30 p.m. start. The Herons' next home game is slated for Fri., Oct. 8 versus Union at 4 p.m.
