GENEVA, N.Y. -- Senior Julie Gick (East Islip/East Islip, N.Y.) scored on a direct kick in the seventh minute to lead the SUNY-Cortland women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over nationally-ranked William Smith College on Saturday afternoon. The visiting Red Dragons (13-3-2), No. 7 in the New York/Northeast Region, have won five straight and 10 of their last 11. The Herons (13-3-0) entered today's match ranked sixth in the nation and first in the New York/Northeast Region.
Gick's ninth goal of the season stopped William Smith's shutout streak at 607 minutes, 20 seconds. The Herons had not allowed a goal since Sept. 25, against Ithaca College.
The Herons outshot Cortland 10-0 in the second half, and appeared to tie the contest inside the final 20 seconds of action. However, the potential game-tying goal was nullified by a William Smith off-sides penalty.
Sophomore Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) finished with two saves for William Smith, who had won 12 straight overall and 25 consecutive home matches before today. For the Red Dragons, senior Toni Bader (Greenville/Greenville, N.Y.) recorded four first-half saves, while junior Margot Weille made eight saves in the final 45 minutes.
The Herons will return to action on Wed., Oct. 27, at 3:30 p.m., hosting the University of Rochester in their regular season finale.
