GENEVA, N.Y. -- The William Smith College soccer team finished the regular season with a 4-1 victory over the University of Rochester. The win boosts the Herons' record to 14-3-0, while the Yellowjackets fall to 8-5-3.
Ranked 16th in Division III, William Smith opened the scoring just over five minutes into the match on a corner kick. First-year Kristen Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) got the play started, crossing the ball from the right side. Senior Antoinette DeLucia (Shenendehowa/Mechanicsville, N.Y.) touched the ball on to classmate Tatiana Korba (Wooster/Wooster, Ohio), who finished it off for a 1-0 Heron lead.
The Yellowjackets, ranked sixth in the New York/Northeast Region, equalized just two minutes later when sophomore Christine Sipala finished a feed from sophomore Loren Cerami.
The Herons reclaimed the lead in the 28th minute off a goal by Falzarano assisted by first-year Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.). Both teams produced other scoring chances before the half, but neither team could find the back of the net.
After the break, William Smith took control of the match, outshooting the Yellowjackets 8-2 in the second frame. The Herons failed to add to their lead until Perrigo broke through in the 85th minute off a helper from senior Nicole Marks (Berkshire School/Nantucket, Mass.). Senior Cheryl Wallace (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) put the finishing touch on the victory, scoring on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
In net, sophomore Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) made five saves to pick up the win, while junior Kate Donhauser made seven stops for Rochester.
William Smith, winner of 13 of its last 14 matches, will find out on Sun., Oct. 31, where and when it will play in the NCAA Tournament. The Herons have qualified for the tournament every year since 1987.
