GENEVA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Jackie Hall's (Berkshire School/Newport, R.I.) 10th goal of the season propelled the second-seeded William Smith College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Nazareth College in the first round of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The Herons advance to the semifinals round to take on host Ithaca College, the No. 3 seed, at 1:30 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 30.
Hall eluded a Nazareth defender and beat first-year goalie Kelly Jo Smith (Hilton/Hilton, N.Y.) with a shot to the left corner just 4 minutes, 49 seconds into overtime. Smith finished with 12 saves, including 10 after halftime. Sophomore Marjorie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) recorded two saves for William Smith.
Sophomore Kathy Hoyt (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) fired in a pass from first-year Josie Moore (Camden/Camden, N.Y.) off a penalty corner to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 advantage with just under five minutes remaining in the first half.
The host Herons forced overtime when sophomore Nicole Livingston (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) scored off a penalty corner with just over 16 minutes remaining in regulation.
William Smith (11-6) snapped a three-game losing streak and improved its all-time record in the NYSWCAA Tournament to 36-22. The Herons, who outshot Nazareth 24-4, are ranked 16th in this week's NFHCA Coaches Poll. Nazareth fell to 11-8.
