GENEVA, N.Y. -- The William Smith College field hockey team exploded for a three-goal second half lead and held off a resurgent Union College squad for a 3-2 victory. The Herons improve to 9-3 on the season, 4-1 in the UCAA, while the Dutchwomen fall to 5-6, 2-3.
After a scoreless first half, William Smith sophomore Jackie Hall (Berkshire School/Newport, R.I.) finally broke the silence at the 34:10 mark with a tremendous individual effort for her seventh goal of the season. Twelve minutes later, Hall struck again unleashing a blistering shot off a feed from senior Alison Underwood (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) for a 2-0 lead. Junior Lauren von Bereghy (University Lake School/Hartland, Wis.) gave the Herons a three-goal lead with 21:36 remaining in the contest.
Union got on the board with just under 18 minutes remaining in the game off a penalty corner goal by Yvonne Turchetti (Red Hook, N.Y.) assisted by Susan Joyal (Marshfield, Mass.) and Alison Struzziero (Braintree, Mass.). The Dutchwomen pulled to within one off another penalty corner with 2:55 remaining, but failed to net the equalizer.
Sophomore Marjorie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) made two saves to pick up the win, while Jessica Wells (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) made 14 stops for Union.
William Smith, ranked 14th in the nation, hosts UCAA-rival Hamilton on Sat., Oct. 9, at 2 p.m.
