Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- The Hobart College football team picked up its second win of the season in convincing fashion, pummeling the University of Rochester, 48-21. The Statesmen improve to 2-2 on the season, 2-1 in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Yellowjackets drop to 2-3, 1-2 in the UCAA.
Hobart posted four scoring plays of 58 yards or more, including 82-yard and 83-yard touchdown passes from junior Dan Birdsall (Southampton/Water Mill, N.Y.) to junior wide receiver Andy Pirozzolo (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira, N.Y.). The Statesmen led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter, thanks to Pirozzolo's touchdowns, and 35-0 by halftime.
Pirozzolo finished with three receptions for a career-high 173 yards. Birdsall completed just six of 15 passes, but made the most of his completions racking up 242 yards through the air and two touchdowns.
On the ground, junior Keith Brandon (Northfield-Mt. Hermon/Jamaica, N.Y.) led all rushers with 110 yards on 20 carries. He finished with a pair of touchdowns, scoring from 58 yards out in the second quarter, and from 1 yard away in the third. Junior Travis Widrick (Lowville/Lowville, N.Y.) averaged 16.2 yards per carry thanks to a 72-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He finished with 81 yards on five carries.
Hobart held a 41-0 advantage when Rochester finally got on the board with a 13-yard pass from junior Jeff Piscitelli (Springville, N.Y.) to junior Darren Gaul (Endicott, N.Y.) with 2:59 remaining in the third quarter.
Piscitelli was 16-of-39 for 181 yards and a touchdown, but was picked off four times. Sophomore Anthony Yandek (Parma, Ohio) caught four passes for 96 yards to lead Rochester's receivers.
The Statesmen return to action on Sat., Oct. 16, when they host Franklin & Marshall College at 1 p.m.
