Red Dragons spoil Hobart home opener

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- At the Geneva Recreation Complex, the Cortland State University ice hockey team got a pair of goals from junior Greg Menchen (Hawthorne, N.Y.) and spoiled the Hobart College home opener by a 3-1 count. The Red Dragons improve to 3-0-0, while the Statesmen fall to 1-2-0.

After a scoreless first period, Hobart got on the board first just 1:13 into the second frame on a goal by senior Scott Frein (Camillus, N.Y.) assisted by senior Travis Finkle (Youngstown, N.Y.). Cortland equalized less than three minutes later on Menchen's first tally with a helper from senior Bryce Barteski (Yorkton, Saskatchewan). The team's skated into the second intermission tied at one.

With just 2:43 run off the clock in the final period, senior Jeff Morrissey (Troy, N.Y.) put the Red Dragons on top for good with an assist going to senior Andy McGowan (Grand Island, N.Y.). Menchen's second goal sealed the victory with less than four minutes remaining. McGowan and senior Jay Bartle (Wrentham, Mass.) were credited with assists on the play.

In the cage, junior Chris Connolly (Melrose, Mass.) made 22 stops for the Statesmen, while first-year Scott Wagner (Stratford, Conn.) made 17 saves for Cortland.

Both teams failed to convert a power play opportunity, with the Red Dragons going 0-for-3, while Hobart was 0-for-1.

The Statesmen return to action on Wed., Nov. 10, when they host Geneseo State at 7:30 p.m.
