Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- The Geneseo State University ice hockey team defeated Hobart College this evening 5-1 at the Geneva Recreation Complex. The Ice Knights improve to 1-4, while the Statesmen fall to 1-3.
Geneseo registered its first goal of the evening just 2:17 into the contest on a marker by sophomore Jason Gurnett (Rochester, N.Y.) with a helper from first-year David Bagley (Rochester, N.Y.). The Ice Knights added another goal at the 14:36 mark off the stick of junior Jack Staley (Geneseo, N.Y.) with assists going to senior Dave D'Amico (Clinton, N.Y.) and junior Brian Bowser (South Brunswick, N.J.).
After the first intermission, the Statesmen wasted little time cutting their deficit in half. Just 2:54 into the second period, senior Mark Yetman (St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland) scored his first goal of the season. Junior Cam Matheson (Surry, N.H.) and junior Eric Christianson (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned the assists on the tally. Geneseo regained its two-goal advantage late in the second period when Staley scored his second goal of the night, this time on the power play. D'Amico and senior Matt Archer (Pittsford, N.Y.) were credited with assists.
In the third period, sophomore Derek Powell (Clairton, Pa.) scored a short-handed goal at the 7:35 mark to make it a 4-1 game, and assisted on the final goal by sophomore Anthony Scorsone (Geneseo, N.Y.) on the power play with 19 seconds remaining in the contest.
Junior Greg Lenti (Kew Gardens, N.Y.) made 35 saves for the Ice Knights, while junior Sam Weiner (Philadelphia, N.Y.) made 36 stops for the Statesmen.
Hobart closes out its current three-game homestand with its ECAC West opener on Sat., Nov. 13, at 4 p.m., against Elmira College.
