Statesmen fall to Dutchmen, 84-78

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Hobart College got 22 points from sophomore Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.), but it wasn't enough to power the Statesmen past visiting Union College in Division III men's basketball action. With the 84-78 win, the Dutchmen remain undefeated with a 6-0 overall record and a 1-0 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association mark, while Hobart falls to 2-3, 1-2 in the UCAA.

The Statesmen got out to a quick start, holding a 26-20 lead with 8:17 remaining in the first half. Union came charging back with a 20-6 run to end the half with a 40-32 lead. After the break the Dutchmen led by as many as 12 in the opening minutes of the second half, but this time it was Hobart that came storming back. The Statesmen used a 13-0 run, keyed by sophomore Brian Schiele's (St. Anthony's/Seaford, N.Y.) five points, to claim their final lead of the contest 48-47 with 14:52 left to play. With the game tied at 57, Union slowly rebuilt its lead that hovered around eight points for the rest of the game.

The Dutchmen were led by sophomore Dave Musella's (Loudonville, N.Y.) game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore C.J. Rodgers (Chicago, Ill.) also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Gambino led Hobart's efforts with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. First-year Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards. Junior Kevin Leonardo (Coxsackie-Athens/Coxsackie, N.Y.) scored 11 points to go with seven assists, while senior Rob Pisanelli (Our Lady of Lourdes/Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 10 points and eight assists.

The Statesmen return to action on Sat., Dec. 11, hosting Skidmore College at 4 p.m.
