Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- The William Smith College basketball team extended the nation's longest home court winning streak to 72 games with an 85-58 decision over Union College on Friday evening. The Herons (5-2, 2-1 UCAA) forced 29 Dutchwomen turnovers and have now won 14 consecutive home openers. Union fell to 4-3, 0-1.
William Smith raced out to a 17-0 lead in the game's initial five minutes, and led 43-22 at the half on the strength of 55.6% field goal shooting. The Herons led by as many as 33 in the final 20 minutes.
Senior Liz Masten (Williamsport/Williamsport, Pa.) and junior Mollie Masten (Williamsport/Williamsport, Pa.) shared game-high scoring honors with 13 points apiece. Mollie Masten also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and handed out four assists. Senior Liz Brown (Marcus Whitman/Rushville, N.Y.) tallied 12 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Sophomore Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) had nine points and eight boards, and first-year Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) added nine points and seven caroms.
Sophomore Heather Bennett (Westwood/Westwood, Mass.) led Union with 12 points and seven rebounds. Juniors Erin McNamara (LaSalle/N. Providence, R.I.) and Beth Perry (Letchworth/Bliss, N.Y.) netted 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Herons return to action tomorrow, Sat., Dec. 11, when they host Skidmore College at 2 p.m.
