Herons win 73rd straight at home

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- At Bristol Gym, sophomore Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to lead the William Smith College basketball team to a 68-45 win over visiting Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon. William Smith extended the nation's longest home court winning streak to 73 games and improved to 6-2, 3-1 in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association. Skidmore fell to 2-6, 0-2.

With the score knotted at 16-16, the Herons intensified their team defense and held the Thoroughbreds to two points in the final 7:58 of the first half. William Smith outscored Skidmore 16-2 during that span to take a 32-18 lead into the locker room. For the game, the Herons held Skidmore to 26.8% shooting and forced 29 Thoroughbred turnovers.

Cornwell backed up her double-double with three assists and three steals. Senior Liz Masten (Williamsport/Williamsport, Pa.) tallied 16 points, 3 assists, and 2 blocked shots, and sophomore JeanneMarie Vinchiarello (Our Lady of Lourdes/Dover Plains, N.Y.) finished with a career-high 15 points.

Senior Liz Brown (Marcus Whitman/Rushville, N.Y.) contributed 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals. She moved into 5th place on William Smith's career assists list with 294.

For Skidmore, first-year Marci Riddell (Oneonta/Oneonta, N.Y.) scored nine points and ripped down 14 boards.

The Herons return to action on Thurs., Jan. 6, 2000, when they host Keuka College at 7 p.m.
