Shutout streak reaches 210 minutes

CANTON, N.Y. -- The William Smith College field hockey team's defense isn't winning any popularity contests with opponents this season. For the third straight game, the Herons shutout the opposition, posting a 4-0 victory over St. Lawrence University in Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association action.

Sophomore Marjorie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) recorded her third straight shutout in 210 minutes of play this season. In 290 collegiate minutes she has yet to allow a goal. MacVean was called on to make just one save this afternoon, raising her season total to seven -- a testament to the William Smith defense playing in front of her.

Junior Lauren von Bereghy (University Lake School/Hartland, Wisc.) opened the scoring seven minutes into the contest, finishing off a pass from senior Ami Ford (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.). Less than two minutes later, it was Ford's turn to tally a score, assisted by senior Allison Underwood (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.). William Smith took a 3-0 lead into halftime courtesy of another von Bereghy-Ford score at the 4:30 mark.

Sophomore Nicole Livingston (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) added the final score late in the second half. The Herons outshot the Saints 14-1.

William Smith returns to action on Sat., Sept. 18, when the Herons host the annual William Smith Invitational. The Herons open up the weekend's action against Susquehanna University at 11 a.m.
