GENEVA, N.Y. -- The William Smith College soccer team opened the 1999 Heron Cup with a 6-1 win over New York University. In the second game of the doubleheader, Union College shutout Geneseo State University, 3-0.
Senior Tatiana Korba (Wooster/Wooster, Ohio) and first-year Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) scored first half goals to give the Herons a 2-0 lead at the break. Both finished with two goals, while Perrigo also added an assist.
After halftime, NYU looked poised to make a game of it, pulling to within a goal of William Smith on Pearl Odu's goal in the 50th minute. Instead of revitalizing the Violets, it instead lit a fire under the Herons who scored four goals in just over six minutes.
Perrigo's second goal touched off the barrage in the 53rd minute. By the 59th minute, sophomore Caroline Miller (Nottingham/Syracuse, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season, giving William Smith an insurmountable five goal lead.
Sophomore Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) made one save in 60 minutes to pick up the win, while Elizabeth Fontaine made seven stops for NYU. William Smith outshot the Violets 26-4.
The Herons return to action on Sun., Sept. 12, when they host the second day of Heron Cup play. NYU will face Union at 11 a.m., William Smith take on Geneseo at 2 p.m.
