GENEVA, N.Y. -- The William Smith College soccer team beat the Geneseo State University Knights 3-0 to win the Heron Cup. This win moves the Herons to 3-2-0 on the year.
The Herons scored their first and game-winning goal in the 24th minute when first-year midfielder Kristen Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) drove home a pass from fellow first-year Kristen Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) The First half ended with the Herons leading 1-0.
The Herons intensified their pressure in the second half, and their hard work paid off when forward Tatiana Korba (Wooster/Wooster, Ohio) nailed a loose ball past the Geneseo goaltender. The Herons third and final goal was scored by senior defender Hillary Bertolami (Brooks School/Acton, Mass.) when she guided a left-footed blast into the upper corner.
Courtney Hall made eight saves for the Knights, while sophomore Leah Cornwell (Wheatland- Chili/ Scottsville N.Y.) was forced to make only one save to earn the shutout.
The Heron Cup is an invitational tournament hosted by William Smith where the Herons and three other schools annually do battle. The Herons finished first this year, ahead of Union College, New York University, and Geneseo State University.
