Susquehanna edges Herons 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Junior Danielle Wenger (Hamburg, Pa.) tallied one goal and one assist, and first-year goalie Katie Hess (Darnestown, Md.) recorded 15 saves to lead Susquehanna University to a 2-1 victory over nationally-ranked William Smith College in the opener of the 1999 William Smith Invitational.

Wenger scored unassisted just 2:30 into the game, stopping William Smith sophomore goalie Marjorie MacVean's (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) shutout streak at 212 minutes, 30 seconds. Wenger then assisted on sophomore Jeannie Yarrow's (West Amwell, N.J.) goal with 4:20 left in the first half to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Hess notched ten saves in the opening 35 minutes.

Senior Ami Ford (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) scored the Herons' lone goal of the afternoon off an assist from classmate Alison Underwood (Johnstown High/Johnstown, N.Y.) with just over four minutes remaining in the contest. MacVean finished with three saves for the Herons, ranked seventh in NCAA Division III coming into today's action.
