Skidmore slips past Herons, 3-2

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College field hockey team survived two, second-half penalty strokes opportunities by William Smith College to defeat the Herons 3-2 in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

William Smith (5-2, 1-1 UCAA) opened the scoring eight minutes into the game on junior Lauren von Bereghy's sixth goal of the season, assisted by classmate Sage Lansing. The Thoroughbreds (5-1, 4-0) pulled even seven minutes later on the first of three goals by Lacey French.

The Herons, ranked 11th nationally, reclaimed the lead on sophomore Nicole Livingston's goal with a helper from sophomore Jackie Hall. Skidmore, ranked 10th, pulled even once again just five minutes later, sending the teams to halftime tied at 2-2.

The Thoroughbreds took the lead midway through the second half and held their breath as William Smith failed to convert on a pair of penalty strokes with 12:35 and 1:08 remaining in the game.

Sophomore Marjorie MacVean made seven saves in the cage for the Herons, while Kristine Osmond made 12 stops from Skidmore.

The Herons return to action on Sat., Sept. 25, traveling to Rensselaer for a 1 p.m., game.
