Statesmen stomp Warriors, 4-0

GENEVA, N.Y. -- The Hobart College soccer team got off to a fast start and cruised to a season-opening win over Keuka College, 4-0. Senior Don Smialowicz (Waldwick/Waldwick, N.J.) scored back-to-back goals in the eighth and ninth minutes to lead the Statesmen's offensive explosion.

"This was a great start for us," Head Coach Willi Steinrotter said. "It's nice to get off to such a fast start and get a chance to play everyone."

Smialowicz broke free for his first goal thanks to a through pass by first-year Justin Pike (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.). Sixty seconds later Smialowicz was at it again. This time senior Chad North (Gloversville/Gloversville, N.Y.) earned the assist. Smialowicz nearly converted all three of his first three shots, when he blasted a blistering shot that Keuka's Eric Carpenter (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) turned aside with a spectacular diving save.

Sophomore Andy Dusel (East Aurora/East Aurora, N.Y.) gave Hobart a 3-0 lead just before intermission, assisted by junior Dave Leahy (Thayer Academy/Norwell, Mass.).

First-year Bryan Bome (Marcellus Central/Syracuse, N.Y.) put the final tally on the board in the game's 67th minute thanks to an assist by junior Hunter Brown (Brooks School/Pittsburgh, Pa.).

First-year Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) got the start in net for Hobart, making one save on his way to his first collegiate shutout. Carpenter, a first-year, allowed all four goals in 74 minutes, while making three saves.

The Statesmen return to action on Wed., Sept. 8, when they travel to Geneseo for a 4 p.m., game.
