Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- William Smith College senior guard Liz Brown (Marcus Whitman/Rushville, N.Y.), in addition to Chase Scholarship Basketball Tournament MVP honors, was named Rochester Area College Athletics Player of the Week, UCAA Guard of the Week, and ECAC Upstate New York Player of the Week. Brown averaged 14.7 points per game, 5.0 assists per game, and 2.0 steals per game in the Herons 3-0 run through the Chase Tournament.
In William Smith's 84-41 quarterfinal win over RIT, Brown scored 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, while dishing out five assists. In the semifinals, the Herons notched an 87-51 victory over Geneseo with Brown scoring a game-high 15 points that included four three-pointers. William Smith set a tournament record with 10 trifectas in the game against the Lady Knights. In the title game, a 76-69 win over St. John Fisher, she scored a team-high 19 points and dished out six assists.
Brown leads the Herons in assists (4.7 apg), steals (4.4 spg), and three-pointers made (25) and is third in scoring (11.2 ppg). She leads the UCAA is assists per game and is eighth in scoring. Brown is currently second on the Herons career steals list with 308 (21 shy of the record), tied for second in career assists with 325, and ninth in career scoring with 1,116 points.
William Smith's fourth Chase Championship in the past five years helped return the Herons to the top-25 this week after a two-week absence. Ranked 22nd by D3Hoops.com, William Smith was as high as 16th in the preseason poll and remained in the top-25 through the third week of the season.
The Herons, who boast collegiate basketball's longest active home win streak (75), are 12-2 on the season and will return to action on Fri., Jan. 21, at 6 p.m., when they host Clarkson University. William Smith's home showdown with St. Lawrence on Sat., Jan. 22, at 2 p.m., has been tabbed by RACA as one of its "Hot Tickets." The Saints handed the Herons a 67-63 loss in Canton, N.Y., on Dec. 3, 1999.
