Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- At Bristol Gym, the William Smith College basketball team moved into first place in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) with a 75-55 victory over St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon. The Herons, ranked 22nd in NCAA Division III and third in the East Region, won their 10th straight and improved to 14-2, 6-1 in the UCAA. St. Lawrence fell to 11-4, 5-2.
Three-point shooting and solid team defense enabled William Smith to capture its 77th consecutive home victory and erase the memory of an early season loss to the Saints in conference action. For the game, the Herons drained 10-of-14 trifectas, while St. Lawrence shot just 24% from the field in the first half.
William Smith went on a 9-2 run midway through the opening stanza, and led 33-19 at halftime. In the final 20 minutes, the Herons shot 46.4% from the floor and led by as many as 25.
Senior Liz Brown (Marcus Whitman/Rushville, N.Y.) led the Herons' herculean efforts at both ends of the floor. She hit 3-of-4 three-pointers and scored 15 points, handed out a game-high seven assists, and made three steals. Brown also held St. Lawrence's leading scorer Meredith Eisenhut (Mohawk Central/Mohawk, N.Y.) to 3-of-12 shooting and just eight points. Sophomore Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) had 16 points and six rebounds, while junior Mollie Masten (Williamsport/Williamsport, Pa.) ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds and matched a career-high with five steals. Junior Brianna Tindall (Pultney/Castleton, Vt.) provided 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point land. Senior Liz Masten (Williamsport/Williamsport, Pa.) continued her fine overall play with nine points, three assists, and four steals.
For St. Lawrence, sophomore Jen Janeway (Lyman Hall/Wallingford, Conn.) hit 5-of-6 field goals and scored a team-high 12 points. First-year Megan Dietrichsen contributed 10 points, six boards, and three blocked shots, and Eisenhut recorded a game-high six steals.
The Herons return to action on Tues., Jan. 25, when they travel to Ithaca College for a 6 p.m. tip- off.
