GENEVA, N.Y.-Friday the 13th proved unlucky for the visiting Union College Dutchmen, as they fell to host Hobart College, 1-0, in Division III soccer action. Senior David Leahy (Thayer Academy/Yarmouthport, Mass.) recorded the game's only goal.
After the teams battled through a scoreless first half, Leahy wasted little time in the final frame. Eight and a half minutes into the second half, he headed home his third goal of the season, off a cross from sophomore Bryan Bome (Marcellus Central/Syracuse, N.Y.). The Statesmen (6-7-1, 3-1-1 in UCAA) nearly took a 2-0 lead when Leahy again headed a ball from the back post, but this one was just left of the post.
Union (1-10-0, 0-5-0) outshot Hobart 8-7 in the first half, but the Statesmen defense limited the Dutchmen to just four shots in the second frame, while firing off 11 of their own.
Sophomore Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) made three saves to pick up the shutout, while sophomore Chris Johnson (Manlius Pebble/South Dewitt, N.Y.) made 10 saves for Union.
Hobart returns to action on Sat., Oct. 14, when it hosts Skidmore College (7-2-1, 3-1-1) in a 2 p.m., match.
