Skidmore wins wild soccer match, 4-3

GENEVA, N.Y.-The Skidmore College soccer team escaped Geneva with a 4-3 victory this afternoon in a wild Division III match with host Hobart College. Andrew Simon led the Thoroughbreds (8-2-1, 4-1-1) with a pair of goals, including the game-winner.

Simon got Skidmore on the board first, driving home a shot from the six in the game's 19th minute. The Thoroughbreds took a 2-0 lead in the 33rd minute off a goal by Bryan Sennott, assisted by Chris Bivona. Skidmore led 2-0 at the break.

In the second half, Hobart (6-8-1, 3-2-1) roared back early to tie the match at 2-all. Senior Hunter Brown (Brooks School/Pittsburgh, Pa.) broke through in the 53rd minute, heading in a long throw-in by senior Jeff Harpham (Kent School/Avon, Conn.). Six minutes later, junior Jesse Martin (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.) kicked home a cross from Harpham a split second before the Skidmore keeper would have picked up the ball.

The Thoroughbreds rallied for back-to-back goals in the 64th and 68th minutes for a 4-2 lead. Sophomore Adam Neary (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.) pulled the Statesmen to within one in the 80th minute, assisted by Brown, but Hobart would get no closer.

Stuart Cowen made two saves and allowed two goals in 38 minutes of relief work to pick up the win, while sophomore Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) made five saves for Hobart.

The Statesmen will return to action on Sat., Oct. 21, when they travel to Alfred University for a 4 p.m., match.
